NOT YOUR ORDINARY DRINK

Prebiotic Soda vs Synbiotic Drink: What's the Difference?

Short answer: a prebiotic soda is a fizzy drink with added prebiotic fibre, and usually no live cultures. A synbiotic drink contains both a probiotic (live microorganisms) and a prebiotic fibre. Either kind can be caffeinated or caffeine-free. The label tells you which one you're holding.

Prebiotic sodas are showing up on more shelves and quick-commerce apps in India, and "synbiotic" is starting to appear next to them. Here's what each word means, and how to tell them apart in under a minute.

What is a prebiotic soda?

A prebiotic soda is a carbonated drink with a prebiotic fibre added. Common ones on Indian labels are inulin (often from chicory root), FOS and other plant fibres. Many prebiotic sodas also aim for less sugar than a regular soft drink, and some add apple cider vinegar or botanicals for flavour.

The key point: a prebiotic soda usually has no probiotic in it. It contains fibre, not live microorganisms. Some prebiotic sodas sold in India list around 7 g of fibre per can on their own pages. Amounts vary, so check the grams on the label.

What is a synbiotic drink?

A synbiotic drink contains a probiotic and a prebiotic fibre in the same product. "Syn" means together. On the label you should see a named probiotic strain, ideally with a CFU count, plus a named fibre. New to the two terms? Start with Prebiotics vs Probiotics.

Prebiotic soda vs probiotic soda vs synbiotic drink

Prebiotic soda Probiotic soda Synbiotic drink
Prebiotic fibre Yes Sometimes Yes
Probiotic (live microorganisms) Usually no Yes Yes
What the label should name The fibre and its grams The strain and its CFU count The strain, its CFU count and the fibre
Caffeine Some have it Usually none Some have it
Storage Usually shelf-stable Depends on the strain Depends on the strain

None of these is "better" across the board. They're built for different things, and the label is where you find out which.

How to read the label in 30 seconds

  1. Find the fibre. Which fibre, and how many grams per can?
  2. Look for a probiotic. If there's a named strain and a CFU count, it's a probiotic or synbiotic drink rather than a prebiotic soda.
  3. Check the sugar. Grams per can, and which sweetener, if any.
  4. Check the caffeine. Some prebiotic and synbiotic drinks contain caffeine. Look for mg per can, and the advisory.
  5. Read the storage line. Live-culture drinks may need the fridge. Spore-forming strains are often stored in a cool, dry place.

Which one fits your day?

  • You want a fizzy drink with fibre and less sugar: a prebiotic soda. Compare grams of fibre and sugar.
  • You want a probiotic and a prebiotic in one drink: a synbiotic drink. Look for the named strain and fibre.
  • You want something for the middle of a workday: check whether the drink has caffeine, and how much.

Where NYOD fits

NYOD is a synbiotic drink, not a prebiotic soda. It's the synbiotic, gut-friendly productivity drink, made for the 3 PM slump. NYOD isn't a high-fibre drink: the inulin is there as the prebiotic half of the synbiotic pair.

What Per 250 ml can
Probiotic: Bacillus subtilis About 1.05–1.07 billion CFU, depending on flavour
Prebiotic: inulin A plant fibre
Caffeine from green coffee beans and yerba mate 70–73 mg, depending on flavour
L-theanine 93–103 mg, depending on flavour
Sugar and calories Zero and zero (sweetened with sucralose)

It's lightly carbonated, stored in a cool, dry place and best enjoyed chilled. Full panels for each flavour are on our FAQ page. It's a drink, not a supplement or a medicine. Good for your gut, great for your day.

FAQ

Is a prebiotic soda the same as a probiotic soda?

No. A prebiotic soda adds fibre. A probiotic soda adds live microorganisms. A drink with both is called synbiotic.

Does prebiotic soda contain probiotics?

Usually not. Check the label for a named strain and a CFU count. If there isn't one, it's a fibre drink.

Does prebiotic soda have caffeine?

Some do and many don't. The label should list caffeine in mg per can if it's there.

Is NYOD a prebiotic soda?

No. NYOD is a synbiotic drink: it has the probiotic Bacillus subtilis and the prebiotic inulin, plus natural caffeine from green coffee beans and yerba mate, L-theanine and zero sugar.

Can I drink these every day?

Follow the label. For caffeinated drinks, that includes the daily limit: NYOD's is not more than 500 ml (two cans). If you have a health condition, ask your doctor.
